China Closes Thousands of Internet Cafes

After several stop-and-start attempts to control burgeoning internet cafes, China's clampdown that started last October managed to close more than 12,000 cyber cafes. Last spring, more than 8,000 were closed down. China has been enforcing a law passed last fall that prevents cyber cafes from operating near schools, positioning the internet as a risk to the mental health and hygiene of teens and children. Separately, China has employed more than 30,000 officers to police the internet. Additionally, China pressures major internet companies, such as Google, to help it censor the web, cutting off those that prove uncooperative.
