Despite having said it had no ambitions to compete with Chinese domestic portals, Yahoo agreed to provide email services to a dozen Chinese sites, opening up a very large market of users into its free, advertising-based membership. Yahoo's Chinese division said that the portal company was not charging the Chinese sites for the services.
