Standards Body Balking at Sender ID Recommendation

ClickZ: Trouble's Afoot for Sender ID

The internet standards committee considering whether or not to adopt Microsoft's Sender ID standard for helping tamp down spam attacks may reject the standard due to intellectual property claims Microsoft wants to maintain over the technology. Several open source foundations, including the one that produces the ubiquitous Apache web server, have said they will not implement Sender ID due to Microsoft's attempt to exert intellectual property claims over its use - even though Microsoft has said it will grant free licenses to those wishing to use it. The deadline for the consensus-based working group to recommend Sender ID to the Internet Engineering Task Force is tomorrow.
