ClickZ: Claria CPO: Web Sites, You're Next
At the Jupiter/ClickZ Advertising Forum, Claria's chief privacy officer - a former attorney for the Federal Trade Commission - warned web sites and web networks that they too would likely have to abide by new "anti-spyware" laws that he predicts will pass in the next couple of years. The provisions to force adware companies to disclose privacy policies at the point at which a user downloads software may apply as well to content downloaded from sites that track user behavior. It may not be good enough for companies to merely have a privacy policy somewhere on the site. They may instead have to put certain aspects of their data collection policies up front, before users start to get tracked.
