CNET: Yahoo searches for China
Yahoo launched a new Chinese search engine just a week after Google announced its purchase of a stake in Baidu, another Chinese search firm. The new Yahoo Yisou ("top search") site will focus on a bare-bones search interface, contrasting from Yahoo's existing 3721.com portal site. Both Yahoo sites appear to remain uncensored in terms of links to content focusing on a lack of democracy in China. Searches from U.S. addresses showed content that would prove very controversial to Chinese authorities.
The Internet is swelling with new Chinese users, growing from 83 million last year to a predicted 111 million by 2005, placing China as the second largest Internet population.
