AP President and CEO Tom Curley has stated his belief that technology has not changed the role of media and journalism, reports The Associated Press.
The comments were made by Curley during the Seoul Digital Forum in South Korea. Curley explained that while technology has changed, it remains a journalist's job to keep powerful institutions and people in check.
He also admonished that media outlets to go where the audience is and not try to make them come to the media, a change brought about by altering technology and media consumption habits. To demonstrate AP practices what Curley preaches, the CEO pointed to an agreement that puts AP content on Nintendo's Wii gaming console.
Separately, AP will soon be announcing a deal with Attributor Corp. to monitor the Web for unauthorized use of its content. The initial phase of this partnership will fingerprint AP text, then scour a vast number of Web pages to findĀ matches.
Only text will be tracked in the stages of the test, but more formats will be added later on. The tracking service will also work with AP partner media outlets to find anyone republishing AP content in an unauthorized manner.
