AOL Working on Broadband-Optimized Search

AOL plans to launch a search function this summer aimed specifically at broadband users, reports CNET. "When we launched AOL.com seven to eight months ago, we designed it to be a broadband portal," Jonathan Miller, CEO and chairman of AOL, is quoted as having said. "We're taking the same mentality to search."

Miller was speaking at the Goldman Sachs Internet Conference in Las Vegas and would only add that the search function would involve multiple sources and load quickly. He did say that AOL wants to "evolve the entire experience - start from ground zero with what would be a good broadband experience that takes Google (technology) and adds on top of that."

AOL wants more advertising income as its subscription income dwindles. It launched AOL.com as a free portal last summer, offering ad-supported online content. It has lost nearly 30 percent of its subscribers since September 2002.
