After about eight months of testing, CNET reports AOL is set to launch its Local.AOL.com local search application to the general web public. Previously, only AOL subscribers could test out the system. AOL has had difficulties structuring its sales department in the past, particularly when it comes to integrating sales efforts among its many media channels. Local search is perhaps the single most difficult sales task, involving many small transactions. But AOL's parent company, Time Warner, could theoretically leverage its existing local sales channels, currently focused on cable and other media. Currently, AOL partners with Ingenio, which sells AOL's inventory on a pay-per-call basis.
