While Rupert Murdoch wants his MySpace to out-portal the portals, recently portal-ized AOL has plans to become more like MySpace, which is fast becoming a generic term for social networking sites, writes Business Week (via paidContent). AOL is apparently building a social-networking platform based on its popular AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), which has 43 million users, to better enable those users to create and share content. The shorthand for the project within AOL is "AIMspace," though that's not likely to be its public name.
The platform's features are expected to begin trickling out in March and will blend AOL content with user-created content and conversation, with music playing a major role. AOL Music has been a major player all along, with 17 million unique visitors in December, according to comScore.
