CNET: AOL ditches broadband offering
AOL's turnaround strategy hinges on being able to cling onto the new trend of broadband penetration, but it confirmed that it will be ditching its own broadband service, as it proved unattractive to the market. The service was about 25 percent more expensive than other service providers, and the Time Warner content placed within the proprietary network just didn't prove worth the extra money for people looking for fast Internet access.
AOL will continue to offer a cheap membership subscription for those who bring their own Internet access via broadband, but they will not sell the access themselves. Time Warner, AOL's parent, remains one of the largest broadband providers, but adding the AOL package on top of its cable offerings proved to be harmful to sales.
