Jeffrey Goodin of California faces up to 101 years in prison after a judge found him guilty under the CAN-SPAM Act of sending fraudulent emails to AOL users in an attempt to gain their bank account and other personal information.
Sixteen victims from several states testified at Goodin's trial that they had lost up to hundreds of dollars each as a consequence of fraudulent emails from Goodin, TechNewsWorld reports. Goodin was found guilty by a Los Angeles jury of using multiple Earthlink email accounts to send deceptive emails to AOL users designed to look like they coming from AOL's billing department and asking for their bank and credit card information.
An Earthlink official testified at Goodin's trial that the company lost over $1 million due to his phishing attempts. AOL blocked access to its network on multiple occasions due to spam coming from Earthlink accounts such as Goodin's.
Goodin's case is the first jury conviction under the federal CAN-SPAM Act, passedĀ four years ago. Goodin is set to be sentenced on June 11.
