AOL Makes Good on Pledge to Drop Netscape

Dot-com 1.5 folds quietly shut

As of March 1st, AOL is finally pulling the plug on Netscape support.

Come next month, no bugs will be fixed, nor holes patched, in the latest version of the Netscape browser. For those seeking up-to-date software beyond the most recent iteration of Netscape, AOL shall point people to Firefox, which comes with an extension that makes it look like a Netscape browser.

The latest version of Netscape will still be available for download.
Firefox was developed on Netscape technology, so the two have much in common.

AOL bought Netscape in 1998. It used the browser for its subscription-based internet service, but placed minimal emphasis on keeping Netscape competitive with other browsers.
