The River: WhenU: Its Friends and Enemies
WhenU's aggressive effort to distinguish itself from spyware purveyors puts it in cahoots with unlikely partner Aluria, the maker of AOL's anti-spyware software. In fact, users of Aluria's products will soon be able to get the software for free in return for running WhenU's adware - software that sends people pop-up ads. While not exactly at odds with the objectives of Aluria, most anti-spyware firms and organizations have been radicalized to the extent that they also oppose online advertising in less sneaky forms, many even calling normal tracking cookies "spyware."
