AdWeek: ANA Opposes Do-Not-E-Mail Registry
The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) came out against the Do-Not-Email Registry on which the Federal Trade Commission must report back to Congress this spring. The ANA told the Commission in a letter that such a registry wouldn't solve the spam problem and would, instead, constitute a major security liability, with a large list of valid email addresses that could very well spread to the spammers themselves.
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and the Association of American Advertising Agencies (4As) have both weighed in on the issue already, complaining a new registry could impede the growth of a multi-billion dollar industry. All three trade groups are taking a more cautious approach to their advocacy than did the DMA last year during the debate leading up to the Do-Not-Call Registry. The DMA was widely seen then as shrill, ineffective and a magnet for ill will among consumers and politicians.
