For Amazon, Christmas lasts all December long.
This holiday season Forbes reported a marked increase in online spending for consumer electronics amongst American consumers — many or most of which flocked to Amazon.
Amazon reported its best holiday season so far. Business peaked on December 10, during which customers ordered over 5.4 million products — about 62.5 items per second.
Top sellers included Garmin GPS systems, Samsung HD televisions, Canon cameras, and the Nintendo Wii (clearing Amazon's aisles at 17 systems sold per second).
But consoles mean little without video games to accompany them. Best-selling titles included Super Mario Galaxy and Call of Duty 4.
The online retailer is allegedly also having trouble keeping its prized tech item in stock. For weeks since its November launch, the Kindle electronic book reader has been sold out. Users must queue in line for the $399 unit, which can only be shipped within the US from Amazon warehouses.
Other retailers, particularly brick-and-mortars like Target, have struggled. This may be due to consumers' desertion of home items and clothing — which comprise Target's "sweet spot" — in favor of electronics.
