Amazon Video On-Demand has added 500 new "stores," or pages, related to TV show favorites like Family Guy, Supernatural, and Battlestar Galactica.
The dedicated pages sell various seasons of featured shows on DVD, as well as licensed merchandise like books, soundtracks, video games, posters, and toys and collectibles.
Amazon is also providing content around the DVD offerings: episode summaries, character lists, and video clips of cast interviews.
The e-tailer launched its Video On-Demand service this summer, with a 40,000 TV and movie database for customers to choose from. Unlike its original video service, however, selections can now be live-streamed without commercials or downloads.
The initiative is not expected to generate significant profits. Amazon had to pay large royalties to Hollywood studios, and develop the costly technical infrastructure required to make the service reliable, The New York Times reported.
The TV show sites, however, seem better poised to boost Amazon's overall sales because they cater to strong and existing fanbases. Die-hards may also be baited by free episodes of certain prime-time shows — some of which will even be shown prior to airtime.
Amazon recently announced that 6,000 movies and television shows from CBS, Hulu, Sony Pictures Television and indie filmmakers would be shown for free on its subsidiary IMDb.com.
