ICANN Watch: Tralliance in talks with New.net on .travel
The International Air Transport Industry (IATA) wants dibs on a new .travel gTLD domain extension. But while current round of ICANN applicants is limited to year 2000 applicants, the organization is leveraging negotiations with the alternative New.net registry, which currently offers .travel domain names accessible by a limited number of Internet users.
Of concern is IATA's bent towards the airline industry versus the travel industry as a whole. To balance the scale, IATA is co-sponsoring the effort with Tralliance. Should ICANN ever approve .travel as an official gTLD, it would most certainly override New.net .travel domain web sites, causing extreme grief with New.net customers.
