Adobe Sees Future of Software Online, Ad-Supported

New version going online

In an effort to beat Google's Picasa to the punch and broaden reach into the consumer market, Adobe intends to offer a hosted version of its popular Photoshop image-editing program in the next three to six months, reports CNET.

The stripped-down version of the software will be hosted on PhotoBucket, where the company already hosts Adobe Remix, a web-based video-editing tool.

Like Google Apps, which will compete with the yet-to-be-released Microsoft Live, Adobe plans to attain revenue via advertising, a major shift in how software is delivered to the consumer.

On the radical new model, Random Culture writes that it "is wholly dependent on how the ads are integrated into the offering, and if consumers find them worth the trade-off for the price."
