Adobe, Microsoft Announce Online Productivity Tools

Both Adobe and Microsoft have made announcements regarding initiatives that enable people to "do more" online.

Adobe has said it will acquire Virtual Ubiquity, which vends Buzzword, a suite of online productivity tools similar to Google Apps, Zoho and others.

The company made the purchase as part of an initiative to allow users of Acrobat to share work more easily. Buzzword works both on- and off-line, allowing for the easy transfer of documents and files.

Microsoft has announced two things. The first is a re-branding of Office Live to Office Live Small Business, a move to more definitely target the small business market that increasingly turns to web-based software.

That shift is happening as business owners look to both save money and not deal with the IT headaches that come with supporting installed software.

The second of Microsoft's announcements is Office Live Workspace. This new offering allows users to store and share over 1,000 documents online and syncs tasks and contacts with Microsoft Outlook. Both are being marketed as online "extensions" of Microsoft Office.
