Ad-Supported Widgets Go Live for BlackBerry

BlackBerry Cool on Zumobi

Mobile widget firm Zumobi launched a widget app for BlackBerry units. It is fully ad-supported.

To promote the new BlackBerry functionality, industry weblog BlackBerry Cool will launch a proprietary widget. (On the Zumobi site, "widgets" are called "Tiles.")

"With Zumobi available now on BlackBerry devices, we will be able to reach our audience directly with news that is important to them while they are on the go," said editor-in-chief Douglas Soltys of Blackberry Cool. "Until now, there have been few options to do this successfully over mobile."

View a gallery of existing Zumobi Tiles. Content partners include AP Olympics Report, NPR, Major League Baseball, Facebook and Twitter. Users may create their own widgets though a function called Tile Wizard.

A recent M:Metrics study found Americans browse an average of 4.6 hours per month on smart phones like the BlackBerry. What's more, three in 10 mobile users recall mobile ads.
