Facebook's chief of marketing products Carolyn Everson hinted that ads or some other revenue stream will be added to its recent Instagram acquisition.
Business Insider asked specifically if Facebook would put ads into Instagram, and Everson gave this cagey response: "Eventually we'll figure out a way to monetize Instagram."
She cited having a small team relative to its audience as a reason that they have not yet done so.
The $1 billion purchase of then-nine-employee Instagram may be a bellwether as to how Wall Street judges Facebook's likelihood of succeeding in making such purchases useful. A typical tech company valued at $1 billion, growing at an average industry rate, has profits of about $50 million. The revenues required to make that sum can be estimated only after Facebook indicates into what sort of business it would like to mold Instagram.
